SPARC-PIRG Briefing to U.S. Congressional Staff

 


The Open RN project was please to be a participant in the Open Textbook Pilot grantee showcase during a briefing to U.S. Congressional staff members on 3/15/22 by U.S. PIRG and SPARC. 

Information was shared with Congressional staff that Open Textbook Pilot grants are a competitive grant program by U.S. Dept. of Ed with:

  • $24 million in FY18-21 (plus $11 million in FY22)
  • 16 grants to 13 states (many multi-state projects)
  • Potential for $200 million in student savings
  • Significant demand from community for more
PIRG shared student perspectives regarding impact of textbook costs and "wants to speak for those who don't tell anyone."

Other showcased OTP grantees included the Louisiana Library Network (LOUIS), Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries of Illinois (CARLI), Remixing Open Textbooks through an Equity Lens (ROTEL), and Consortium of Open Resource Educators (CORE - includes OpenStax at Rice University,  Association of Colleges and University Educators (ACUE), HCC and PVAMU from TX, Florida International University, and Pasadena City College out of the CA community college system.)

Policy opportunities discussed included:
  • FY23 Appropriations
  • Renewal and increased funding for the Open Textbook Pilot
