Model of the Information Search Process

Image
As the workgroups for the Fundamentals and Skills OER textbooks have started the development process, I am reminded of the "Model of the Information Search Process" that one of the CVTC Librarians shared with the Pharmacology workgroup as we were getting started in Summer 2019.  It is important for developers to understand the common thoughts, feelings and actions associated with creating OER textbooks, and Kuhlthau explains it well in this model.  We all start with feelings of uncertainty, vagueness and doubt as explore relevant, evidence-based sources for our chapters.  But eventually, as we actively work with the content, feelings of clarity and a sense of direction and confidence develop as we put the materials together and eventually create a satisfying product! Reviewer process of Nursing Pharmacology has begun!

The Peer Review process of the Nursing Pharmacology textbook has begun with over 40 peer reviewers from across the country.  A rubric and a private Hypothes.is group is being used to gather feedback from reviewers.  After incorporating feedback from reviewers, it is anticipated that the Nursing Pharmacology book will be formally published in Pressbooks in June 2020, and also uploaded to LibreTexts for easy remixing of this Open Educational Resource.

The first OER101 course is wrapping up and we are pleased to report that 13 participants from various departments completed the course!  The next course starts March 6th, so please register by February 28th using the registration link below. Student Success with Open and Affordable Resources This course will provide a beginner-level overview of how student success relates to open educational resources (OER) through the lens of who, what, where, when, why, and how. Participants will examine the problem with the current textbook publishing model, investigate student and faculty perceptions, identify stakeholders within their own institutions, review trends in the Wisconsin and higher education landscape, explore available resources, and begin a plan to get them started on their own OER journey. Upon course completion you will receive a certificate as a Wisconsin OER Champion! Instructor Vince Mussehl, Chippewa Valley Tech
