Quarterly Performance Report, Third Quarter Year 3

 

We are please to share the project's progress in this quarter's performance report. Here is a high level overview:

  • The Open RN Nursing Fundamentals and Nursing Skills books were cowinners of the “Best OER” international award from OE Global.
  • We reached 1.8 million page views by over 620,000 international users this month.
  • In addition to 11 Wisconsin Technical Colleges adopting Open RN textbooks, twelve national and international nursing programs have also reported adoptions.
  • Over 110 individuals registered to review the Open RN Management and Professional Concepts textbook. After the national review period ends January 19th and revisions are made based on reviewer feedback, we anticipate the e-book will be published ahead of schedule in Spring 2022.
  • We continue to receive fantastic feedback from students and faculty about the Open RN online virtual simulations created in H5P. We will continue to develop these OER learning activities. So far, we have released 20 virtual simulations with CC BY licensing and 5 are currently in progress.

As part of the response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Open RN team is pleased to announce the release of an OER Newborn Assessment Virtual Simulation  created in the H5P platform.  Faculty can incorporate this link into their learning management system for students to independently complete this scenario on their computer:  https://cvtc.h5p.com/content/1290975333436042968 An associated Teaching Plan is also provided for faculty with additional discussion questions that can potentially be used for a group activity.  Please provide feedback on this scenario using the survey link in the Teaching Plan.  We value your feedback as we continue to create additional virtual simulations using H5P.

NCLEX Next Generation: Case Study Questions

NCSBN just released " The NGN Case Study " in their quarterly Next Generation NCLEX News, explaining how Next Generation questions are formatted in association with case studies.  The Open RN project is currently creating similar case studies and critical thinking questions for the Nursing OER Textbooks using H5P.   If you have personally developed similar case studies for your Pharmacology, Skills, Fundamentals, Mental Health or Management  courses that you would be interested in sharing with the Open RN project under CC by 4.0 licensing, please feel free to forward them to Kim Ernstmeyer at kernstmeyer@cvtc.edu. If your case study is selected for use by the Open RN workgroup, your name will be credited in the associated textbook.

New virtual simulation activities - Patient with Heart Failure on a Ventilator and Patient with Chronic Angina

The Open RN team has quickly created 2 new H5P branching scenarios that can be used as "virtual simulation" by instructors trying to find  online learning activities to substitute for clinical. In addition to assigning these as independent learning activities, instructors could also potentially add additional group discussion questions regarding: focused assessments, setting goals and outcome criteria, prioritization of interventions, and evaluation.   Suggested discussion questions are included in the teaching plans below.
