Nursing Skills, Second Edition is Released

 


The second edition of the online Nursing Skills OER textbook has been released. The URL for this 2nd edition remains the same as the 1st edition: https://wtcs.pressbooks.pub/nursingskills/. The affordable print version is being developed by XanEdu and will be available by January 2024. 

The ISBNs for the second editions are:

EBOOK ISBN: 978-1-957068-10-7

PRINT ISBN: 978-1-957068-11-4

The rationale for maintaining the same URL for this second edition and for all future Open RN textbooks include:

- We are following the standard set by OpenStax in establishing one URL per book and tracking revision history.

- Mostly minor verbiage revisions for improved clarity were made in Nursing Skills 2e. The only chapter that underwent significant updates was Chapter 23 (IV Therapy). Otherwise, dozens of new NCLEX Next Gen-style questions were added and hundreds of minor verbiage revisions were made to improve clarity. Here is the summary of the revisions made to the second edition of Nursing Skills. This summary is also included in the "Introduction" section of the book.

-When "cloning" the Nursing Pharmacology 1st edition in Pressbooks into a new URL for the second edition, a significant amount of behind-the-scenes formatting and accessibility settings were lost during the process, requiring a significant amount of time for the team to find and resolve these issues. 

Therefore, to streamline the process of creating second editions going forward, the "live" online Open RN textbooks will be updated during summer months when the least number of students are accessing the book. This will also promote sustainability of updating the books after grant funding ends.

Newborn Virtual Simulation Scenario

As part of the response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Open RN team is pleased to announce the release of an OER Newborn Assessment Virtual Simulation  created in the H5P platform.  Faculty can incorporate this link into their learning management system for students to independently complete this scenario on their computer:  https://cvtc.h5p.com/content/1290975333436042968 An associated Teaching Plan is also provided for faculty with additional discussion questions that can potentially be used for a group activity.  Please provide feedback on this scenario using the survey link in the Teaching Plan.  We value your feedback as we continue to create additional virtual simulations using H5P.

New virtual simulation activities - Patient with Heart Failure on a Ventilator and Patient with Chronic Angina

The Open RN team has quickly created 2 new H5P branching scenarios that can be used as "virtual simulation" by instructors trying to find  online learning activities to substitute for clinical. In addition to assigning these as independent learning activities, instructors could also potentially add additional group discussion questions regarding: focused assessments, setting goals and outcome criteria, prioritization of interventions, and evaluation.   Suggested discussion questions are included in the teaching plans below.
