Open RN Grant Information
The Open RN project is funded by a $2.5 million dollar grant from the
Department of Education to create 5 OER Nursing Textbooks with 25 associated
Virtual Reality scenarios.
Who: The Open RN project is led by
Chippewa Valley Technical College. Five nursing textbooks are being
collaboratively written with nursing faculty from other Wisconsin technical
colleges. The books will be reviewed by
nursing faculty, deans, healthcare alliance members, and other industry
representatives to ensure the content is current and accurate.
What: The OER Nursing textbooks are aligned with
the Wisconsin Technical College State Nursing curriculum.
When: The publishing timeline for the OER Nursing textbooks is:
Fall 2020:
Nursing Pharmacology
Fall 2021:
Nursing Fundamentals and Skills
Fall 2022:
Mental Health & Community
Concepts and Management &
Professional Concepts
Where: The textbooks will be published
in Pressbooks and will be free and openly accessible to all nursing students
and faculty everywhere. The books will
be accessible in multiple formats, such as: electronic; pdf; or hard
cover. The textbooks will also be
accessible via LibreTexts, where they can be easily “remixed” by nursing
faculty interested in customizing their own textbook.
Why:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, textbook costs
have skyrocketed by 88% over the past decade, causing decreased accessibility
by students. The anticipated cost
savings for each nursing student using these five OER books is over $694. The
projected maximum impact of this project for all nursing students in Wisconsin
Technical College Nursing programs is $1.5
million dollars annually in textbook savings. Other nursing programs across
the country will also be able to easily customize the OER textbooks to their
curriculum, which will likely lead to even more cost savings nationally.
It can take several years for textbook
editions to be updated with current, evidence based practice. Conversely, Open
RN textbooks can be easily updated online as new evidence based practices
occur.
Open RN textbooks will contain adaptive
learning activities to assist students in developing clinical judgment in a
similar manner to how they will be tested with the new NCLEX “Next Generation”
exam questions.
